Teen Mixed Media Art Classes and Portfolio Development for Secondary Art Schools offered at Hag Atelier in the Historic Distillery District

Teen Mixed Media Art Classes

Mixed media art classes for teens, 12 years and up are based on the student’s needs and interests. The objective of this course is to develop creativity and individual style Students will learn the formal elements of drawing: line, shape, value, texture, and linear perspective as well as the opportunity to work in watercolour, acrylic, graphic novels, anime, sculpture and encaustic.

Portfolio Development Classes For Students Applying to Secondary Art Schools

This class helps students create and build a portfolio of work that will round out their school applications, prepare them for a secondary school art program, and strengthen the impression they make with the portfolio submission committee. This class delves into various mediums and approaches from classical approaches to latest contemporary art practices. Focus will be on both technical and conceptual ability. It is recommended for students to begin work on a sketchbook and there is a voluntary homework assignment each week. I also work with specific guidelines from various school applications, so that the student is prepared for the interview.

Art Parties

Come party at Hag Atelier and unleash your inner artist. It’s a fun, affordable entertainment where friends come together to paint and discover their creativity in a fun-filled atmosphere. Whether its a bridal party, birthday celebration, corporate event or girls night, its an upbeat creative time for everyone. You’re welcome to bring  your own snacks and drinks. There’s a fridge and a sitting area at the studio to enjoy. The studio provides canvases, paint and brushes.

Group Painting

Working on one painting can be a fun way to collaborate. One canvas for each group of six will be provided. Each participant will have an opportunity to make her own mark on the paintings by alternating working on both canvases and changing their positions.  It will be a wonderful memory of a enjoyable day together and you will be able to bring home a painting as a lasting memento.

Bridal Party Collage Mementos

Being a bridesmaid is a very important role. Each woman has a special relationship with the bride and has been chosen as an important person in her life. This workshop would provide an opportunity to create something that will be treasured and kept forever to remember this special day and also their special connection. These would be individual works of art that could be kept by the bridesmaid or given to the bride. They commemorate the relationship and fun that each bridesmaid has shared with the bride. They could be images of trips together, photos of the two of them together as children as sisters or best friends, images of high school, or just hanging out. Each woman would be responsible to bring along photocopies or prints of images of their choosing which can be printed from their home printer. They can also bring along mementos such as ticket stubs to concerts for example. I can provide decorative papers, surfaces, glue, paint and text as well as scissors and exacto knives.

2-hour session

Fall Classes

Fall classes are underway. There is still room for this Sunday’s 6 hour Encaustic Workshop, starting at 10:00. There is also room available for the Teen Mixed Media class starting tomorrow at 4:00.

Portraiture and Still Life

Manet, Degas and Matisse are three artists who combined portraiture with still life. The vitality of their portraits owe much to the inclusion of still life. The still  life portion garnered the same attention as the figures and, in doing so, ignored the traditional hierarchy of figures and objects. Still life can be used as a symbolic representation of the mood, character and lifestyle of the model. The model, conversely, can be painted in a way to also be a n iconic symbol. In this course we will explore composition and rendering of juxtaposed models and still lives. Students are free to work in the medium of their choosing. TBA

Open Studio

Hag Atelier studio is available for artists and students to work on independent projects. Encaustic pans and tools are available for use. Please contact me 24 hours ahead to book space. Open studio runs from Monday to Friday. Students can pay as they go or pay for 5 days and receive a discount. Please note that the 5 days do not need to be booked consecutively.

10:00 to 4:00, $100 /day $395/5 days

Teen Contemporary Excpressions

This course explores developing a conceptual idea to a finished work or works. It is the first step to preparing for a cohesive exhbition. We will work on cultivating an idea and choosing the medium/media that best supports the concept. It could be installation with found object, video, large scale painting or drawing, sculpture, books, etc. One idea can be explored with different media if time allows. At the end of the week we will have an informal opening. For students that are interested I am free to discuss and work through their ideas the week before so that they are prepared with materials. TBA
